Gallatin Public Utilities administers an industrial pretreatment program as required by United States Environmental Protection Agency Regulations (40 CFR 403). The State of Tennessee approved Industrial Pretreatment Program regulates the quality of wastewater entering the sewage system, and thereby helping to protect the Gallatin Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Gallatin Wastewater Treatment Plant, and most other wastewater treatment plants, was designed to treat domestic wastewater. The Industrial Pretreatment Program is responsible for monitoring the wastewater discharges from permitted industrial users to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local industrial sewer use regulations in accordance with an approved enforcement plan.
Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG)
Fats, oils, and grease, also called cooking grease, that is flushed down the drains can cause clogs in your pipes as well as in our sanitary sewer mains. These grease clogs can also cause sewer overflows or sewage back-up into homes. To help prevent grease clogs we offer the following tips:
- Never pour cooking oil or grease into your sink
- Pour used cooking oil or grease into a small container and allow it to harden
- When the container is full place it in a bag a put it in the garbage
- If you have a garbage disposal, use it as little as possible since food particle and grease may also clog your pipes
- Scrape and wipe off all dishes, pots, and pans before washing.
- Running hot water after pouring grease down the drain does not help
Grease Traps
Restaurants and other commercial food service facilities are required to install and maintain and approved grease trap. This grease trap is designed to capture any cooking oils or grease that may go down the drains before it is discharged into the sanitary sewer system.
